The Mission of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering is to educate scientists engineers and to promote science in the field of transportation planning and engineering. High scientific standards and performance are key objectives in all education and research activities of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering.
The Vision of the NTUA Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering is a future with highly efficient, green and safe transport systems in Greece, in Europe and globally, through high level scientific research and technological development supporting evidence based decision making in all aspects of all transport modes and types.
The Scope of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering comprises all transport modes (road, rail, water, air, combined), all transport types (people and goods, urban and interurban, national and international, terminals) and all phases of transportation projects (planning, design, tendering, construction, delivery for operation, operation, management, maintenance).
The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering was established in 1982 within the Civil Engineering School of the National Technical University of Athens, although transportation engineering courses were already contained in the School curriculum since the 50s’. Currently, the Department offers 22 undergraduate courses at the School of Civil Engineering and contributes to another 8 undergraduate and postgraduate courses of other NTUA Engineering Schools.
The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering is composed by three Laboratories: Pavement Engineering, Railways and Transport & Traffic Engineering, in which advanced research is carried out, exploiting their highly equipped facilities in the NTUA Campus in Athens.
The staff of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering is composed of more than 80 highly qualified scientists (including 5 Faculty members) supporting the education and research activities of the Department, of the School and of NTUA.
The scientific work of NTUA Scientists is highly recognized by the Greek and the Global transportation engineering scientific community, through numerous scientific publications widely cited worldwide, their contribution in numerous national and international Research Projects, scientific Committees and Working Groups and several scientific achievements and awards. Faculty Members are representing Greece in several International Organisations and are often serving the Greek Government as of Ministers, Secretary Generals, Heads of major Public Authorities and Members their Boards of Directors.
The Alumni of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering are excelling in Greece and worldwide in various fields of the transportation planning and engineering science, including the design, implementation and operation of major transportation projects in Greece and worldwide, as well as in world class Transportation Engineering Schools and other Organisations.
