Mobility Award to the Traffic Engineering Laboratory, February 2020
The New Year Event of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on Monday, January 27th, 2020, at 13:00, at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport with the participation of more than 60 members and students of the Department and the School of Civil Engineering.
During the event the Director of the Department Professor George Yannis made a brief presentation of the educational, research and scientific work of the previous year.
Paris Charitatos student of the School of Civil Engineering NTUA, has been awarded with “Apostolos Chr. Yotis” Award, for the highest average grade at the mandatory courses Roads Geometric Design (5th semester), Roads Construction (6th semester) and at the mandatory of cycle course Design of Road and Airfield Pavements (7th semester), during the academic year 2018-2019.
SafetyCube project has been awarded the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2019 as recognition for its innovative open-access web-based Road Safety Decision Support System (DSS) that enables policy-makers and stakeholders to select and implement the most appropriate strategies, measures and cost-effective approaches to reduce casualties of all road user types and all severities in Europe and worldwide. SaferAfrica Project has been awarded the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award 2019 as recognition for establishing a Dialogue Platform between Africa and Europe focusing on road safety management.
During 30th POLIS Conference on 28 November 2019, in Brussels, Belgium, the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) declared its full support and signed the City declaration “The new Paradigm for Safe City Streets” including 10 principles to be recognized by EU cities, as necessary for sound and effective action for traffic safety.
The PhD Candidate of the Department of TPE of NTUA, Mr. George Kasselouris, received the 1st Prize in the Annual Panhellenic Competition of the Hellenic Chambers Transport Association (HCTA) “Dimitrios Tsamboulas 2019, on the subject of: “Prospect of developing combined intermodal national and international freight transport in Greece – Obstacles, challenges, suggestions”.
The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on Wednesday, October 23rd 2019 and on Tuesday, October 29th 2019 at Railways Amphitheatre and on Friday, November 1st 2019 at teaching room 109.
At the launch of the 9th International Congress on Transport Research (ICTR 2019), Professor Emeritus Constantinos Abacoumkin received an honorary award for his multi-year contribution to the science of Transport Engineering. The award was given by the Director of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering Professor George Yannis.
The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering participates in the organisation of the International Conference on the Future of Combined Transport LOGI.C 2019.
During the conference the award ceremony of the Hellenic Chambers Transport Association (EESYM) Annual Prize “Dimitrios Tsamboulas” for 2019 will be held.
The event will take place on Saturday, November 9th 2019, at the Central Conference Room LOBBY METROPOLITAN EXPO, at Athens International Airport “El. Venizelos”, at Spata Attica.
The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering was present at the established pan-European celebration of research and science “Researcher Night”, which took place with great success on September 27th 2019 at the Averof building of the historical Patision complex of the National Technical University of Athens.
PhD student Konstantinos Gkyrtis and his supervisor Prof. Andreas Loizos participated in the 8th International Transportation Ph.D. Student Symposium on Pavement Engineering and Infrastructure Materials Technology, that was held at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, on September 12-13, 2019. PhD students (and their supervisors) from worldwide leading universities participated in the symposium with the aim of disseminating results from their research activities. At the end of the symposium, awards were given to the best participants and one of them was given to Konstantinos Gkyrtis for his work entitled “Challenges towards structural condition assessment of asphalt pavements” in the framework of his research under the scope of his PhD dissertation.
During the International Conference on Airfield & Highway Pavements 2019 that was held in Chicago (USA) on 21-24 July 2019, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) awarded Dr. Lily Elefteriadou, Ph.D., M.ASCE with the prestigious Harland Bartholomew Award. She was awarded by the Co-chair of the Conference Andreas Loizos, Professor of NTUA, in the presence of Muhammad Amer, M. ASCE – Director, T&DI.
The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on July 12th 2019 at Railways Amphitheatre.
On July 5th 2019 at the premises of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the School of Civil Engineering of the NTUA, a meeting was held between members, the Laboratory of Transportation Engineering of the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering of the NTUA and delegation from Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) Greg Winfree (Director), Bill Eisele (TTI Mobility Division Head and Senior Research Engineer), and Juan Villa (Mexico City Office Manager and Research Scientist). The meeting was the result of a four-month preparation under the coordination of the Deputy Rector of NTUA for Academic Affairs Prof. Marinos Kavouras and Prof. Andrea Loizos, Director of the Laboratory of Pavement Engineering of the NTUA. The workshop included the presentation of the activities of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering presented by the Head of the Department Prof. George Yannis, also the members of the Laboratory of Transportation Engineering of the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering and the TTI presented the related activities. The overall workshop coordination was under the auspices of the Rector of the NTUA, Prof. John Golias and aimed to identify innovative areas of research collaboration of common interest.
The workshop ended with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between NTUA-TTI in the Rector’s office.
Professor Andreas Loizos, the Director of the Laboratory of Pavement Engineering is a co-chair of the conference: International Airfield and Highway Pavements Conference that will be held on July 21–24 2019 in Chicago Illinois which is supported by the Transportation & Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE.
NTUA within the framework of the Fifth UN Global Road Safety Week organized a Scientific Workshop titled “Digitalisation and Road Safety Research” which took place with great success on 17 May 2019 in Athens.
Bradley Cliatt, Apostolos Ziakopoulos, Akis Theofilatos, Emmanouil Barmpounakis, Ioanna Pagoni, Dimosthenis Pavlou, Maria Pomoni, Dimitris Tselentis, Konstantinos Gkyrtis, Eleni Mantouka and Foteini Orfanou PhD students and Postdoctoral researchers of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA were awarded with the NTUA Thomaidion Award for outstanding publications in scientific journals or conferences proceedings for the year 2017.
The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on March 15th, 18th and 21st 2019 at Railways Amphitheater.
