The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the chair of Transportation System Engineering of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) are co-organising the 7th Symposium of the European Association for Research in Transportation (hEART) in September 5-7 2018 in Athens.
Members of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering participated to the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 97th Annual Meeting that held with great success in Washington, D.C., on 7-11 January 2018. The meeting program covered all transportation modes, with more than 5,000 presentations in nearly 800 sessions and workshops, addressing topics of interest to policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives of government, industry, and academic institutions. The examination of the Diploma Theses of the undergraduate students of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on November 1st and November 3rd 2017.
Akrivi Varela, Vaia Drossou and Alkistis-Irini Batala, students of the School of Civil Engineering NTUA, have been awarded with “Apostolos Chr. Yotis” Award, for the highest average grade at the mandatory courses Highway Engineering I (5th semester), Highway Engineering II (6th semester) and at the mandatory of cycle course Pavements (8th semester), during the academic year 2016-2017.
The School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) was selected among 13 Greek Universities to host a Greek Diaspora Fellowship Program Project entitled “Collaborative Research in Smart and Shared Mobility: Grow Research Capacity and Mentor Graduate Students in Transportation Planning and Engineering”.
Assistant Professor Eleni I. Vlahogianni led the project, together with Associate Professor, Konstantina “Nadia” Gkritza, a Fellow from Purdue University, Indiana US.
New International Master of Science in Environmental Engineering totally taught in English in now available in Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM).
The MS course aims to train engineers capable of dealing with complex problems and design conventional and innovative solutions related to environmental and territorial issues such as water resources, soil conservation, pollution control, energy resources and environment and land protection.

Emmanouil (Manos) Barmpounakis has successfully defended his PhD dissertation titled: “Investigating the decision-making process of drivers during overtaking by Powered Two Wheelers”, on July 13th 2017. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Prof. John Golias.
Konstantinos Gkiotsalitis defended his PhD dissertation titled: “Dynamic destination and transport mode estimation for interdependent trips under spatio-temporal variations”, on July 12th 2017. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Emeritus Professor Antony Stathopoulos.
The 10th International Conference on the Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields, took place with great success in Athens at Divani Caravel Hotel, from June 28th to June 30th 2017, co-organised by the Laboratory of Pavement Engineering of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering – NTUA, the University of Illinois and TU DELFT.
NTUA is inviting experienced researchers established outside Greece, who would like to pursue a PostDoc research programme at the NTUA Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering, to apply for European or Global Fellowships of the Marie Curie Individual Fellowships Programme of the European Commission (deadline: September 14th, 2017). Ioanna Pagoni has successfully defended, on February 21st 2017, her PhD dissertation titled: “Passenger travel choices and airline responses under market-based environmental policies using discrete choice modeling and game theory”.
John Frantzeskakis, Emeritus Professor of the School of Civil Engineering NTUA and Chairman of the School, Director of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering and of the Traffic Engineering Laboratory, passed away on February 12th 2017.
The National Technical University of Athens introduces the “Apostolos Chr. Yotis” Award, to honour the late Emeritus Professor Apostolos Yotis, upon recommendation of his family.
The award will be given to the student who will gather the highest average grade at the mandatory courses Highway Engineering I (5th semester), Highway Engineering II (6th semester) and at the mandatory of cycle course Pavements (8th semester), according to the current Undergraduate Studies Program of the School of Civil Engineering.
The award is accompanied by a prize of 1.000€ annually for the first two years and of at least 500€ in the next years.
The New Year Event of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on Friday, February 3rd , 2017, at 15:30, at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport with the participation of more than 60 members and students of the Department and the School of Civil Engineering.
