Fotis Mertzanis has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled: “Contribution to the Investigation of Stopping Sight Distance in three-dimensional space”. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation, Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Emeritius Professor C. Abacoumkin.
The Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering was present at the pan-European initiative of “Researcher Night”, which took place with great success on 25-27 September 2015 at the central campus of the National Technical University of Athens. The main research activities and achievements of the Department in the field of innovative transportation systems were presented to the numerous visitors of the Researcher Night.
Panagiotis Papantoniou has successfully defended his PhD thesis titled: “Risk factors, driver behaviour and accident probability. The case of distracted driving”. This PhD thesis was carried out at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens under the supervision of Prof. George Yannis.
Professor John Golias was appointed Minister for Reconstruction of Production Environment and Energy at the new transitional Government of Greece. It is the first time that a Transportation Engineer as well as a Faculty Member of the NTUA Department of Transportation Planning is appointed Minister at the Greek Government.

Panagiotis Papantoniou, NTUA PhD Candidate and Researcher at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens has been awarded with the outstanding conference poster award of the 1st International Conference on Transport & Health – Changing Perspectives, organised by the University College London and the Transportation Public Health Link, which took place in London, 6-8 July 2015.
A targeted Interdisciplinary Conference on Cognition, Behaviour and Driving took place with great success on June 26th, 2015 in Athens, co-organised by the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the Department of Neurology, Psychiatry and Social Medicine, and the Department of Psychology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA).
Mrs Athina Tsolaki, graduate student of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA, has been awarded the Environmental Awareness Award ECOPOLIS 2015 in transportation for her Diploma Thesis at a special ceremony, which took place in Athens on June 5th 2015. All the nominations concerned undergraduate university Diploma Theses with focus on the measures, actions and practices that contribute to the improvement of urban environment and quality of life in general, exclusively in the area of transportation.
On Tuesday 26 May 2015, Professor George Yannis, Head of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA presented the transportation engineering courses cycle to the Civil Engineering undergraduate students of the 6th semester, within the framework of the information event for the courses’ cycles organized by the School of Civil Engineering.
A Workshop on Observation and Modelling of Pedestrian Behaviour in Urban Areas organised by the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR) took place with great success in Marne-la-Valée – Paris, on 4 May 2015, within the framework of the Post Doctoral research project “PEDMOD– Models of pedestrian behaviour and safety” of NTUA Research Associate Dr. Eleonora Papadimitriou.
Konstantinos Liberis, former Assistant Professor of the School of Civil Engineering of NTUA gave a lecture titled “Current Evolutions in International Railway Engineering”, on March 27th 2015, which took place with great success at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering NTUA.

The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers organized the 6th Pan-Hellenic Conference on Road Safety, which took place with great success in Athens at the Amphitheater of the Ministry of Infrastructure, on 12-13 March 2015. The main objectives of the conference were to explore and assess the level of road safety in the country and the efforts and innovations implemented to improve the road safety of drivers, vehicles and pedestrians in Greece. More than 300 road safety experts and stakeholders participated at the 8 sessions with 35 oral and 24 poster presentations.

Athanasios Theofilatos, Emmanuil Barmpounakis and Ioanna Pagoni, PhD students at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA were awarded with the NTUA Thomaidion Award for outstanding publications in scientific journals or conferences proceedings for the year 2013.
Nadia Gkritza, NTUA Alumni and Associate Professor at Purdue University, Lyles School of Civil Engineering, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, gave a lecture at NTUA titled: “Transportation and Energy Interdependencies: Implications for Infrastructure Design”, on February 26th 2015.

More than 200 road infrastructure safety experts and stakeholders have attended the 2-day Technical Conference on Current Advances in Road Infrastructure Safety Equipment organised by the European Union Road Federation (ERF), in cooperation with the Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers (HITE) and the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), that took place on 12-13 February 2015, in the Acropolis Museum, Athens.

The New Year Event of the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering took place with great success on Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Amphitheater of Railways and Transport with the participation of more than 80 members and students of the Department.
A special session of the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) was dedicated to the memory of Matthew Karlaftis (1969-2014), NTUA Professor, and his contribution to TRB and to transportation research and education. This memorial took place on January 11th, 2015 in Washington, in the framework of the 94th TRB Annual Meeting.
Nikolas Geroliminis, NTUA Alumni and Assistant Professor at the Urban Transport Systems Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) gave a Lecture on December 19th, 2014, at the Department of Transportation Planning and Engineering of NTUA titled: “Modeling and Control of Congestion in large-scale networks with multiple modes of transport”, based on the respective ERC project he is coordinator.
